Project: Pirate101

The Game:
Pirate101 is Kingsisle Entertainment's pirate-themed massively multiplayer role-playing game (MMORPG) for the whole family.  Players can complete quests, sail ships, befriend companions, and battle enemies in a unique turn-based combat system.  The game is massive, with a huge variety of imaginative themed worlds to explore, such as Cool Ranch, a spaghetti western world, and Marleybone, a dog-inhabited city of cobblestones reminiscent of a Charles Dickens novel.

Two months after the release of Pirate101, the game won the Player's Choice Award for Game of the Year from MMORPG.com, edging out Guild Wars 2.

The Sound:
I was a sound designer on the audio team for Pirate101 at Kingsisle Entertainment.  The game has a ridiculous amount of content and we likewise had a ton of sounds to design.  I touched all areas of the game's audio, from character combat and big cinematic moments, to UI sounds and immersive ambient environment sounds.  I also directed off-site sound designers when we needed extra help.  Launching Pirate101 was a huge undertaking and I am proud to have been on the audio team during those times.

Below you can hear some demos of my work.  First is a reel of character combat sounds, followed one of the 17 'puppet show' cinematics from the game.  These puppet shows were a fun way to present some exposition to the player when they arrive in a new world.

The Music:
I contributed additional music tracks for Pirate101, including the two old west piano tracks below, written for the saloons of Cool Ranch, the game's wild west themed zone:

I also created the exciting 'stingers' that play during characters' critical attack cinematics:
